Named a County of Excellence by Georgia Trend Magazine for 2006, 2007, and 2008, Wilkinson County boasts many community and recreational activities making it your “Hometown of the Every Day South.”

The Wilkinson County Recreation Complex provides a county-wide active athletic program including baseball, softball, and football for all ages. Perfect for the outdoorsman, Black Creek Lodge is located on prime hunting land. The Black Creek Lodge offers weekend packages for hunting/fishing in breathtaking natural surroundings. Spend a day on Lake Tchukolako in Ivey. Enjoy a day at the Historic Balls Ferry State Park at the site of a ferry crossing the Oconee River built in 1806 by John Ball, a Revolutionary War veteran.

Visitors can also enjoy the many historic landmarks, antebellum homes, and museums within Wilkinson County. The Gordon Depot Museum is home to many artifacts from the Central Georgia Railroad and is open for tours. The Gordon Depot Museum can also be seen in the 2006 film “My Christmas Soldier.” Take a Haunted History Tour at the Gordon Cemetery. Visit Irwinton’s Eternal Flame memorial and antebellum Union Church or book a stay at The Blue Goose, Georgia’s first bike hostel for cyclists. The City of Toomsboro is home to the antebellum Willett Hotel, the Swampland Opera and Restaurant, Toomsboro Drug Store, Hall’s General Store, and the Syrup Pitcher and was the setting for noted Southern literary giant Flannery O’Connor’s short story “The Misfit” and can be seen in the film version of O’Connor’s novel “Wise Blood”
